Course Summary

Learn the basics of cartoon drawing with Illustrator Sarah Howell . Starting with a stick figure, this class will teach you how to draw faces, gestures and simple perspective drawing while identifying stylistic features of other cartoonists and finding a personal style.

Develop your basic techniques in drawing towards a style specifically for cartooning. An introduction to line, proportion and shading and various existing styles to consider in your own drawings. Develop technique and style and complete the course with a portfolio of cartoon drawings.

Week 1:

  • Face proportions
  • Facial expressions

Week 2:

  • Basic figure construction
  • Hands
  • Feet

Week 3:

  • Using drawing conventions such as negative space and perspective/foreshortening to create dynamic figures

Week 4:

  • Cartooning conventions such as speech balloons, sound effects, speed lines. Elements of a cartoon that are needed when dealing with the non-visual parts of the character’s world: sounds, smells, tastes, sensations, internal thoughts

Week 5:

  • The final session pulls it all together to create a character concept drawing.

About Illustrator Sarah Howell

Sarah Howell is an illustrator of cartoons and comics and mentors others in how to create their own personalised comics. She is Co-Founder of Squishface Comic Studio, a collective of comic creators and illustrators; Co-Presenter of Triple R radio’s Graphic Nature; and she is on the Homecooked Comics Festival Steering Committee (after 4 years as Festival Director).
