Course Summary

Paperwork. It’s not the glamorous part — but it’s the most critical. For newly registered celebrants (or those almost there), the legal obligations of solemnising a marriage can feel daunting. A missed step, an incorrectly completed form, or a misunderstood timeline isn’t just an embarrassment — it can invalidate a marriage entirely.

This workshop brings you back to the essentials with confidence. Led by an experienced celebrant educator, this practical refresher walks you through every piece of legal paperwork required under the Marriage Act 1961, from the Notice of Intended Marriage through to post-ceremony lodgement. You’ll leave with clarity, a reliable checklist system, and the confidence to handle paperwork correctly every time.

  • Wording requirements and your obligations as celebrant

The Official Certificate of Marriage

  • The role of witnesses — who qualifies and what they sign
  • What happens if there’s an error after signing

Lodgement with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages

  • Using RIO to register marriages
  • What “within 14 days” actually means in practice
  • Tracking confirmation and what to do if something goes wrong

Q&A and Paperwork Scenarios

Zee Scott has been solemnising marriages across Australia and the UK for over a decade. She teaches the Certificate IV in Celebrancy at Box Hill Institute and runs a private celebrant mentoring practice. Zee is passionate about supporting newly registered celebrants through the gap between finishing their qualification and feeling truly ready to do the work.

This course is ideal for celebrants who are registered or in the final stages of registration and want to feel completely confident in their legal paperwork obligations. Also suitable for practising celebrants who’d like a thorough refresher.
