Course Summary
The seventeenth-century was an age of artistic splendour in The Netherlands, when Rembrandt and Vermeer produced some of the greatest masterpieces in history. Yet many more artists including women, were also producing portraiture, landscape and genre painting. This course will focus on the layered context of unique geography, religious struggles, colonial expansion, and political liberalism that made possible the production of art of unprecedented beauty and quality in the Dutch Golden Age. A previous knowledge of art history is not necessary.
Much travelled art historian Dr Roberta Crisci-Richardson will guide you through this period of art and culture, with an exploration of this remarkable era.
