Many fantastic titles have been developed into TV series or films in the last few years. Whether you watch it as a group or individually, watching the adaptation is a great way to add to your book group discussion! Here’s a round-up of recent adaptations of Book Group favourites.
Emma [B0001] by Jane Austen
Jane Austen’s classic romance has been adapted many times. The recent film starring Anya Taylor-Joy is a new take on the matchmaking Emma and her understanding of relationships, but it is no less delightful. For a comparison, why not also watch Clueless or the 1996 adaptation starring Gwyneth Paltrow?
The White Tiger [B2030] by Aravind Adaga
The new film based on Adaga’s often darkly comic novel has been in development for over a decade. Following the rise in fortunes of servant Balram, played by Adarsh Gourav, it is a thoughtful reflected on the class system in India. This faithful adaptation was directed by Ramin Bahrani, a friend of the author.
Little Fires Everywhere [B2273] by Celeste Ng
This tense series starring Reese Witherspoon and Kerry Washington does deviate somewhat from the book but packs no less of a punch as a house burns down in the first scene. Race, class, family and motherhood all play a part when Mia and Pearl arrive in town and drastically impact Elena’s seemingly perfect family life.
The Dry [B2274] by Jane Harper
Harper’s homegrown rural noir has now been made into an excellent feature film. Starring Eric Bana as federal officer Aaron Falk and filmed in Victoria’s Wimmera region, this is an excellent adaption of Harper’s novel. This is a very faithful adaption that echoes the harshness of the environment and the impact on the characters. A must-see for crime fans.
Normal People [B2293] by Sally Rooney
Rooney’s novel is outstanding, and this series is a fantastic adaptation of her work on screen. Following the relationship of young Marianne and Connell as their lives continue to be intertwined, this immersive BBC series has been hugely popular.
