Course Summary
Develop an understanding of how to approach still-lives and in particular flower painting. Learn the step by step process of painting flowers from the initial block-in and gesture to the final level of finish.
In this class we will work from photographs and still lives. All exercises are designed to provide students with a hands on understanding of the four elements that produce a strong painting (edges, values, shapes and colours).

Anne Bennett
Dr Anne Bennett is an experienced visual artist, curator and educator. Anne, whose practice encompasses drawing, printmedia, painting, artists books, and curatorial projects, holds a PhD in Visual Art from Monash University and Master of Art Curatorship from the University of Melbourne.
She has held in excess of 15 solo exhibitions since 1986 including Tolarno Galleries, Pinacotheca, numerous institutional galleries around Australia and an exhibition of large scale monotypes at the Post Office Gallery at Federation University, Ballarat and a performative installation of drawings at The Front, Docklands. She has also participated in excess of 70 group exhibitions, including curated shows at National Gallery of Victoria and galleries in Korea, China, Lithuania and UK.
Basic palette (I recommend Winsor and Newton as a good entry level)
- Titanium white
- Yellow (cadmium yellow medium or lemon or any other bright yellow)
- Yellow ochre
- Red (cadmium, vermillion or any other warm red)
- Red (alizarin or permanent red or any other cool red)
- Ultramarine blue
- burnt umber
- Ivory black
Brushes: Combination of filbert, flats or round brushes. Please ensure you bring a variety of ‘hard’ hair brushes and ‘soft’ hair brushes – at least two hard hair brushes and two soft hair brushes from sizes 1 to 6 depending on the brands.
Canvas or canvas-paper: we will do 2 paintings in total please use supports between A4 and A3 in size. I will use Canson canvas-paper for my demonstrations but you can bring a canvas, or boards that are already primed.
Palette: disposable paper palettes are great but you are welcome to bring a sturdy glass or wooden palette
Mediums: if you are working in oils please bring a small bottle of Gamsol
Containers: 1 small plastic jar or similar size container (with lid)
Palette knife for cleaning and mixing colours
Apron or something that you won’t mind getting paint on
Notification of a class cancellation will be advised 48 hours prior to the course commencement date. We advise to purchase your materials once you have received email confirmation that your class is proceeding as scheduled.
