Course Summary

Europe in Transition: 1945–1950

This course offers an in-depth exploration of Europe in the immediate aftermath of World War II, a period marked by reconstruction, uncertainty, and the birth of a new global order.

We will examine how political, economic, and social forces reshaped nations and influenced the trajectory of the continent. Key topics include:

  • The devastation and recovery of war-torn Europe
  • The emergence of influential leaders and institutions
  • The ideological divide that set the stage for the Cold War
  • The beginnings of European integration and the Marshall Plan

Through critical analysis of major events and personalities, you’ll gain insight into how decisions made during these five years reverberated across decades, shaping the Europe we know today.

About Richard Stone

Richard Stone has long been intrigued by history and fascinated by human creativity. An extended period of tertiary study produced a Degree in Art History and Music along with Diplomas in Art and Design and in Education, followed by a satisfying 30-year career as a teacher and lecturer in independent schools.

Throughout his teaching career, Richard also practised as a painter and photographer and satisfied an urge to travel by developing a program of European study tours. Since the mid-90s, Richard has accompanied more than 20 groups of secondary students and adults to various destinations in search of cultural enlightenment. Richard has been teaching at the CAE since 2016, sharing his enthusiasm for history, literature and the arts through a range of talks.
